Monarch Butterfly

Monarch butterflies are like many of the books’ characters. They are Changers! Butterflies start as one thing (an egg), then become another thing (a caterpillar), and still another thing (a chrysalis) and THEN a beautiful butterfly that makes a remarkable journey! The entire egg-to-butterfly process, called metamorphosis, takes about 30 days.

The Big Journey

Tens of millions of monarch butterflies travel from the USA to Mexico each winter. It takes 4-5 generations of Monarch butterflies to make a full migration.

The easiest way to tell a male monarch from a female is by looking for two dark spots on the hindwings—females don’t have these spots. View Now

Monarch butterflies smell and taste with their antennae and legs, which are covered with sensory cells called chemoreceptors. These chemoreceptors help Monarchs find milkweed to lay their eggs on. Learn more about Monarch Butterflies!
