Wingworks

Gad knows there are all sorts of things that fly, like insects, birds and airplanes. He calls these things “Wingworkers”! He is thinking about what they have in common and how it helps them fly safely. How these Wingworkers stay up in the sky is called Aerodynamics. It is made up of 2 words: Aero meaning air, and Dynamics meaning the way things moves around each other.

It’s fun to learn about flying through experiments. Try this one! Send Gad a picture of your paper airplane and tell him how far it can fly.

AuntM says, “If I were a wingworker, I’d choose to be a duck because I like being in the water--downy feathers and special oil would make it possible for me to not feel cold as I bob for food! What kind of wingworker would YOU choose and why? Tell me!”

In Gad’s Book, the MagicWords include a special “wingworker”, or flyer--the Dragonfly. Dragonflies are special because their four wings can move differently at the same time. Hannah the Dragonfly asks: “What type of mechanical flier can you think of that flies like me? Here is a hint: this flying machine can go straight up from the ground and can hover. Send me the answer--you can also draw me a picture.”
