Silhouette Travel Story

The Changers Adventures is not a book to be ‘read’, rather it is a book ‘to do’ with a Reader/ Guide and an active group of children Listener/Learners. The returns for reading aloud are huge! [1]. When you do these books aloud, they offer weeks and weeks of curriculum, focusing on Children’s most important learning needs.

TheChangersAdventures enhances reading aloud in many ways. Here’s a new one: it's learning through the introduction of Silhouettes. At the bottom of each story page is a doorway into another activity. At the beginning of the book, children can see two black lines. As the story continues, those two lines begin to change. Over the course of the story, they evolve from a line to a few little dots, to more recognizable shapes of people and animals. Changing from dots to silhouettes of the characters in that book depicts the journey of the Quest, which becomes clearer as the story progresses.

Silhouettes are not new; they began being used 100s of years ago [2]. However, in your Changer book, they are a new way of showing and telling a story.

They can also spark your imagination: what stories can you create starting with a black line(s)? Use your imagination to go beyond what you’ve drawn before, and create a story told in silhouettes.

Research suggests that reading aloud enhances learning; from PBS, whose research states, “Reading aloud to young children helps them thrive.”

2 “[Reading aloud] builds vocabulary, improves comprehension, promotes literacy, and develops attention, memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills alongside imagination. Furthermore, reading aloud strengthens the bond between the Reader and the child."
